Get 'totonou' with waterfall meditation - 23m high, one of Kanto's most powerful waterfalls in Yuhi no Taki

TAKIGO
What is Takigo?
Takigyo is one of Japan's ancient ascetic and water-purification practices, in which you receive the full force of a waterfall to cleanse your mind and body.
Rooted in the Shinto rite of 'misogi' and in Buddhist and Shugendo training, it has long been practiced as a time to calm the mind and face oneself by placing the body in cold water. In recent years, more people perform it not as a religious discipline but as a way to reset the mind and body amid nature.
Wrapped in the sound of the falls, the cold of the water, and the forest air, you can savor an extraordinary time away from daily life — that is the appeal of takigyo.
TAKIGO does not impose any particular faith or religious ritual; while giving thanks to nature such as the waterfall, forest, and water, we focus on tuning the mind and body through forest yoga and waterfall meditation. Yuhi no Taki is an authentic waterfall with powerful, impressive water volume.
It's recommended for anyone who wants to try waterfall meditation in Kanto, or to take on an authentic experience as a day trip from Tokyo.

What exactly is 'Misogi' (purification)? How is it related to Takigyo?

It is a Shinto practice of washing and purifying the mind and body with water to wash away spiritual 'impurities.' Its origin lies in the myth of Izanagi purifying himself in the sea. It is the idea of using water to reset the 'sins and impurities' that accumulate in daily life and return to a state of purity. [The difference between Misogi and Harae] ・Misogi = a 'self-driven' type where you enter the water yourself ・Harae = an 'other-driven' type, a purification performed by a priest Waterfall meditation is close to 'misogi.' TAKIGO's waterfall meditation is close to a self-driven reset experience where you 'take a step forward by your own will.'

Can I participate if I live far away?

Absolutely! Many TAKIGO participants come from outside Tokyo and Kanagawa. We welcome visitors from a wide range of areas in the Kanto region, including Saitama, Chiba, and Shizuoka. TAKIGO is a great choice not only for those coming from the Tokyo area, but also for those combining it with sightseeing in the Gotemba, Odawara, or Hakone areas. Minamiashigara City, home to Yuhi-no-Taki Falls, is easily accessible by car from Odawara, Hakone, and Gotemba. If you want to add a unique activity to your Hakone trip, enjoy a nature experience before or after sightseeing in Odawara, discover a hidden gem near Gotemba, or fill some time before visiting the outlet mall, TAKIGO — with its waterfall meditation, forest yoga, and breathing practice — is a perfect fit. Please feel free to apply, no matter how far you are coming from.

Will I have to walk along cliffs, be made to run, or pass through any dangerous paths during the experience?

No, please rest assured. At TAKIGO, we do not conduct any training such as walking along cliff paths or running. Check-in is done at the parking lot, it's about a 3-minute walk to the changing area, and about another 3-minute walk from the changing area to the waterfall. The paths are basically paved, and the experience does not involve any dangerous routes. TAKIGO is an experience where, while feeling the power of the waterfall, you take deep breaths in the forest and reset your mind and body. Rather than pushing your body to its limits, we value time spent calmly facing the waterfall while feeling nature, as in forest bathing.

Are there bears around Yuhi-no-Taki Falls? Can I join even if I'm worried about bears?

Because the area around Yuhi-no-Taki Falls is a nature-rich mountain region, we cannot claim it is completely free of wildlife. In the past, there have been sightings of what appeared to be a bear around the Yagurazawa area of Minamiashigara City. That said, even our staff who use the site every day have never spotted a bear around Yuhi-no-Taki Falls during a TAKIGO experience. While we cannot guarantee that bears will never appear, the experience does not involve spending long hours deep in the mountains. It's about a 3-minute walk from the parking lot to the changing area, and about another 3-minute walk from the changing area to the waterfall—short distances. The routes are also basically paved. Some people feel anxious after seeing news reports about bear incidents, but the Asian black bear is by nature a timid animal that tends to avoid people. However, because there can be danger in cases such as a sudden close encounter or when a cub is nearby, maintaining a proper distance and taking basic precautions is important in nature. At TAKIGO, we conduct the experience with safety in mind—not leaving food or trash outdoors, not entering mountain trails alone, and proceeding while checking the surrounding conditions. It's a nature activity where you can experience waterfall training and forest bathing with only short distances to walk, making it easy to join even for those who think, "I'd like to feel nature near the Kanto area, but I'm worried about hiking or bears deep in the mountains."
